Well done 5S, we had the best attendance in the whole school last week-close to 100%.  We are thrilled with this and hope that everyone manages to keep this up after the school holidays.

Tudor banquet

In history I have been learning about the Tudors.

On Tuesday the second of December my year and I had a Tudor banquet.

·        We had chicken and pottage; pottage is a type of thick soup.

·        Afterwards we had apple tansy, which is a pudding.

·        Afterwards we played some games.

·        Then we sang some songs.

·        We also brought some stuff that we made.

·        I had a really good time.

Well, well, well…we have had such a busy few weeks in 5S and Year 5 as a whole. Where do I start?

In LITERACY we have been looking at writing detailed and reliable accounts. We’ve been using 1st and 3rd person, time connectives, adjectives and sandwich clauses to make our writing sophisticated!

An example would be…

Class 5S, who have been very hard working, have been looking at sandwich clauses.

We also witnessed a crime in the staffroom and then had to create open ended, in depth questions in order to solve the case.  The crime was just a construction and it was acted out by no one else but Haider. Furthermore, we watched scenes from Charlie and the Chocolate factory and then wrote reports on what we had seen, heard, felt and thought about the event!

In NUMERACY we have been looking at long division.  I know it’s a very scary thought and something that lots of us find very hard…but…5S have been working hard and it has paid off.  Using the RUCSACmethod the class have been working through their problems carefully.  Showing working out and method is very important. We have also been looking at reverse operation.  For example…

If we know that 4 multiplied by 7=28

then… 7 multiplied by 4=28… and

28 divided by 4=28…

and 28 divided by 7 is 4.

By knowing this we can solve number problems that we find tricky or check our answers!

History has been a big topic for this term.  We have been learning all sorts of information about Tudor kings and queens, Tudor food, Tudor “fashion”, Henry VIII’s relationship with the Catholic church, Tudor homes…the list could go on and on and on and on…

We were lucky enough to go to the theatre recently.  We had a fabulous time. We saw ‘THE TERRIBLE TUDORS’at The Palace Theatre. On the way  Laeem, Samir and I had a sing at the back of the bus…apologies if we were too noisy folks. The show was very exciting, but it was also very gruesome and in some parts scary.  There was great singing, wonderful dances, brilliant acting and we even got a 3D show in the second act. Everyone was jumping, screaming and giggling as colourful fireworks, heavy rocks and a spooky skeleton head seemed to dive out into the audience. We even got a packet of smarties during the interval. They were lovely. I had 2 packets!  Yum Yum.

Finally, thank you for everyone who listened carefully to our Tudor assembly.  Everyone had put lots of effort into creating a very entertaining and informative piece.

We’ll give you an update soon.  That’s all for now, over and out…

Ordsall Hall

November 3rd, 2008

Today 5S have had a fantastic day at Ordsall Hall.  We have been learning about food and drink during Tudor times, we have found out about building construction, we have looked at furniture from the period and we had a few rounds of archery! The girls were much better than the boys!

We were greeted by costumed guides who told us so much information. We also got to play on a pirate ship. My group behaved very well and the whole class were enthusiastic and they listened very carefully.  Ask anyone from the class, I am sure that they will be able to give you a few facts about The Tudors and Ordsall Hall.

Victoria Baths

October 20th, 2008

5S went on a very exciting trip to Victoria baths.  The day was action packed.  In the morning the class were given a tour around the building.  We took a look at the beautiful stain glass windows, we explored the female, male and 1st class males swimming pools. We saw the old living quarters, the gallery and the sauna rooms.  Later on, we got in the pool.  It was empty of course, because the baths are now a heritage site and hasn’t been sued as a swimming pool since the early 90’s.

In the pool we learned about poor and rich Victorians and the fact that poor Victorians didn’t like to wash.  The poor thought that was washing was deadly and dangerous.  They believed that oil and dirt kept the germs away.  We did some drama role plays using old cloths.  Later on we created some very interesting art work.  We made a collage of textured rubbings with charcoal using objects, flooring, tiles and artefacts at the baths.  Some of the boys ended up with more charcoal on their face than they did on their work!

It was extremely cold in the baths because the place wasn’t heated and so big coats and scarves were needed.  At first the children thought that the baths were very cold, old and empty.  But with some wonderful drama, art work and creativity the place soon came alive.  The class were enthusiastic and really well behaved-so well done. A special well done to Khadija and Roda for working very hard in the drama. Well done to Hassan for asking some very interesting questions.  Thank you to all of the tour guides and art specialists at the baths, we had a right old good time!!!

Peppermint creams

October 20th, 2008

5S spent a couple of afternoon’s making some very tasty peppermint creams.  We have been learning about writing effective instructions and so after making a batch of the sweet treats the class had to use numbered steps, diagrams, labels, imperative verbs, description and equipment lists to make a clear set of recipe instructions.  It was very fun but also very messy.  There was an icing sugar storm that swept through the whole room. Miss Smith was sad because the carpet got covered in icing sugar.  But she soon cheered up once she had tried one of the lovely peppermint creams! Some of the children’s peppermint creams didn’t quite live up to Miss Kendal’s Blue Peter (and here’s one I made earlier) attempt and so we made them again and improved our instructions! I apologise to my group, I made them add far too much water and we ended up with a mixture that looked like green custard!!!  Thank you to Zainab A and Muffazel for helping me do all of the washing up and drying in the staff room.

Whitworth Art Gallery

October 8th, 2008

Yesterday 5S took a trip to Whitworth Art Gallery. Waiting for a bus in the wind and walking through the rain didn’t put anyone off having a wonderful time. The class observed 3 different pictures at the gallery.

They then created sketches and used descriptive words to explain how the pictures made them feel and what they thought was going on in the art work. Some of the children then went on to write very creative stories about the figures in the pictures.

We also recorded the classes thoughts, feelings, ideas and responses to what they had seen in each picture. It was amazing how different each person’s interpretation of the picture was so different.

A particular well done to Rahilwho drew some excellent pictures of the brave knight on horse back. Well done to Burhan who was very enthusiastic. He had some very exciting and creative stories to tell about what he thought was going on in the art work. We hope that 5k and 5c have a great time at the gallery too!
